Thoughts for National Coming Out Week
Oct. 9, 2008 by ngarrett
I have a sign in my office which reads, “There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” Many students who have visited have commented on it, at times with cynicism. Many have come back and said that “it finally makes sense.” This was shared with me many years ago from a friend:
“Each in our own time, each at our own pace, each in our own way. Coming out is a process; a journey, not a race. Unlike most journeys, there is no one destination in mind, only a direction. Keep on. When you stray, or slow down, don’t be afraid to ask advice or direction. Your journey is yours alone, and regardless of where you end up, or when, don’t let anyone else plan the trip.” –Steve Basile, Austin
National Coming Out Day is Saturday, October 11. No matter what, keep on!
The Wesleyan Community is cordially invited to our annual National Coming Out Day Reception on Monday, October 13, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Zelnick Pavillion. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and queer-friendly students, faculty, and staff are invited to meet, mingle, and share stories about coming out and being out! Light refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the Queer Resource Center and the Office of Student Affairs.
