Midnight Madness Basketball Tournament

Think you and your friends got game?????

Well here is your chance to prove it. The Deans Office and The Office of Public Safety are sponsoring a “Midnite Madness” 3-on-3 basketball tournament at the Freeman Athletic Center Fieldhouse on Friday night, November 13.

The tournament will begin at 12:00 midnight. Registration is open to all current students and will be limited to the first 32 teams to sign up by November 7. Teams can consist of three or four players. Awards will be given to the top four teams.

Students are needed to perform in “Unspeakable Acts” or “In the Company of Others” during New Student Orientation 2009

“In the Company of Others” is a time when four to five students share their experiences and thus spark the conversation of what it means to live in a diverse community. “Unspeakable Acts” is a series of vignettes which brings into conversation the importance of addressing sexual violence and working toward healthy relationships. Students must be able to return to campus by Friday, August 28.

Identity Politics at Wesleyan: Student and Faculty of Color Panel and Dinner

Learn about the history of the student of color at Wesleyan, affirmative action, and the politics of the students of color coalition. This event will consist of a short documentary about Student of Color experience at Wesleyan followed by a discussion panel led by Faculty of Color. The panel includes Professor Jay Hoggard from the Music Department, Marina Melendez, Dean for the Class of 2010, and Professor Indira Karamcheti from the American Studies Department.

All donations will benefit Shining Hope for Community (SHOFCO), an indigenous and self-sustaining organization in Kenya, founded by Wesleyan student Kennedy Odede. SHOFCO is currently committed to building the Kiberian School for Girls, which will provide girls in grades K-12 the opportunity to attend school—a right which is presently denied them by Kenyan government. Please participate in the Walk-A-Thon to support this worthy cause.

SUBJECT: Student Judicial Board Applications

Attention Class of 2011:

The Student Judicial Board is seeking to fill four positions with students from the class of 2011. The position is a two-year appointment beginning in the Fall 2009 semester and continuing through the Spring 2011 semester. An application form is attached and is also available through Karen Karpa, Clerk of the Student Judicial Board, located in the Dean of Students Office, North College, First Floor, Room 108. The deadline for applications to be handed in is Friday, May 1, 2009 at 5:00pm. A description of the duties of the Student Judicial Board can be found in the 2007-2008 Student Handbook (http://www.wesleyan.edu/studenthandbook/).

Positions on the Student Judicial Board require a good deal of time, effort, and devotion. Please make sure you are fully aware of the responsibilities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any member of the Board (listed below) or me.

OPEN CALL: SPOKEN WORD EXTRAVAGANZA / OPEN MIKE on MAY 1 !!

On Friday May 1, 2009 there will be a Spoken Word Extravaganza/Open Mic held at 200 Church Street. The event is inspired by a Spoken Word class offered at Wesleyan this spring, ENGL 290.

Half of this event is devoted to a “New Voices Open Mic.” What do we mean by new voices? New voices include persons with little or no spoken word experience. All artists are welcome; we want to hear from you!

The other half is for more experienced slammers; we are putting out an open call for all of you who want to strut you stuff and show Wes the best you’ve got. Please e-mail Lily at lbushmancopp@wesleyan.edu if you’re interested in stepping up to the mic. We hope to see you there!!!
